His writing has a cinematic quality and a retro feel that I appreciate. You could easily imagine Early Riser on the big screen with its howling blizzards and claustrophobic dormatoriums... This is an adventure story and a horror novel, the cannibalistic night walkers and particularly creepy. This is a dark story, but filled with humor and human warmth.I detect a nod to Tove Janson's Moomintroll series here, specifically Moominvalley in Winter, in humans covered in fur, in the separation between the Winter and Summer worlds, in the architecture, and in the Gronk - a fearsome Winter spirit that invokes Janson's Groke of chilling memory.Early Riser is a not to be missed romp in a new world from a master storyteller. Read this if you enjoy the whimsical and the absurd, original ideas, and excellent storytelling. If you’ve read the author’s other books, this one is definitely consistent with their quality and style. In short - I had a ton of fun reading Early Riser! I hope Jasper Fforde comes out with many more books; it’s tough to find other writers I enjoy reading so much.
Spot on Fforde brilliance with more plot twists and surprises than a Thursday Next rewrite. Read it straight through as I couldn’t wait to see how it ended.

I don't know where to start. Fans of Fforde know that any of his books is cause for celebration and that each one will be a complex sometimes frustrating sleigh ride of humor and pathos. Yes, that's dramatic but it's warranted. Charlie is a winter consul in an alternate universe Wales where most of the population hibernates. Hmmm. This means he's responsible for keeping an eye on things. The excitement starts when he has to deliver a nightwalker (it will make sense) and begins to see the rot and problems under the night. He took this job to have continual access to Morphonex, which prevents dreams- a good thing in this situation- but is that really what he wants. As is often the case with a Fforde novel, there are all sorts of tidbits here and there as he effectively world builds and creates a large cast of characters. This might be one, in fact, that's better in hard copy vice e-reader. Thanks to net galley for the ARC. This is a hard one to describe but those who like Fforde and those looking for a genre bending (is is sci-fi? dystopian?) novel.
A good book but not one the best by Jason Fforde.I'm a fan of his work but this book was a lot harder to get into than other.It's a standalone and there's a lot world building at the beginning.Once you pass the first 100 hundred pages the pace gets faster and it's a really pleasant and entertaining book.The world building is astonishing, the style is as humorous and amazing and usual. The plot, when it starts going, is fun to read.It's recommended to Fforde fans but I wouldn't recommended to whoever never read any of his books.Recommended!Many thanks to Viking and Edelweiss for this ARC
